Reproducing Historic Details at the Nathaniel Russell House

2022 | Client: Historic Charleston Foundation

It was an honor to create custom reproduction hardware for one of Charleston’s most iconic historic homes: the Nathaniel Russell House, a Federal-style masterpiece completed in 1808 and now operated as a museum by the Historic Charleston Foundation.

A single shutter knob that had been concealed behind a walled-off window for decades was discovered during the House’s restorations. Although there were no more specimens left, the restoration crew was aware that those knobs would have been used all around the house.

The Process of Reproduction

To replicate this unique piece of vintage hardware, the Nathaniel Russell House team reached out to Charleston Hardware Company. We were the perfect collaborator on this project because of our background in traditional hardware manufacturing methods, antique hardware design, and hardware restoration.

Using molds made from the original knob, we replicated the design in our manufacturing facilities and produced a test for the restoration committee’s approval. We then replicated 125 knobs and matching rosettes that could be utilized throughout the Nathaniel Russell House using conventional forging techniques and the same metal composition as the original: solid brass with a sand-cast base.

A Living Museum of Craft

Each custom knob was installed throughout the home, bringing historical accuracy and beauty back to the shutters. These custom reproductions of antique hardware can now be seen by visitors as part of the home’s permanent exhibit.
